1053 - QD - Phone Alarm for a manhole fire on Northern Blvd. at Murray St.

1055 - Bn. 52 - Have Con-Ed respond for a manhole smoking.  Checking surrounding properties.

1105 - Bn. 52 - Put a rush on Con-Ed.  We had a small fire in the basement of a supermarket at 150-51 Northern.  Fire was knocked down by the sprinklers.  Continuing to check surrounding properties.

1107 - Bn. 52 - Using 2x2.  One precautionary line stretched into the supermarket, a 1 story 100x50 commercial.

1112 - Bn. 52 - We have CO levels in the supermarket of 100 ppm.  Venting at this time.

1116 - Bn. 52 - Transmit the 10-75. Fire in the basement.

A piece of trivia for efd and kfd and others familiar with Flushing. COD Peter Loftus used to shop at that King Kullen. According to my dad, the Dept. car was sometimes parked near the store with the aide sitting behind the wheel.

Yes, I think he lived on 149th Street.    Probably could use the Loftus Smoke Ejector on that job :D
 
Loftus Suction Collector....last carried on the '50s Ward La France Civil Defense Pumpers.
 
If anybody has a WNYF April 1951.....Vol 12.. # 2  it contains an article on the Loftus Suction Collector.
 
Chief, back in the mid fifties we had one tied on the back step left side of our 47 Mack. I can remember an incident where we were using it for a manifold at a fire on the old landfill south of Linden Blvd. It was made of aluminum and it only lasted a short time and then burst at the seams. At that time we still had a Ward CD for a hose wagon with 3 inch hose. A novel idea that didn't work out. That was the first and only time that I can remember seeing one used.
 
Makes me recall a Dad story. The name sake Chief visited quarters one fine day and asked the covering Lt. where the connection was as he didn't see it on the rig. The Lt., not knowing who the Chief was (duh!) said "..it's probably in the basement with the rest of the junk." Needless to say that Lt. was soon covering in the far reaches of the City and the Co's new rig was replaced by an old Ahrens-Fox.

The unit I am referring to was on an older truck, carried large  18\2-18 inch tumes and the ejector unit.  I think there ws a picture in Wheels of the Bravest
 
The recently retired COD Ed Kilduff grew up 1/2 a block away from this box on Murray St between Roosevelt Ave and Northern Blvd
