A look at life as a Baltimore City firefighter - Engine 31 - Posted 4/13/22

This firehouse was built in 1901 on York Road (Greenmount Avenue) south of Gorsuch Avenue for H&L 7. 7 Truck was originally formed on 6/1/1888 in a firehouse annexed from Baltimore County. Chemical Co No. 4 was with them until disbanded on May 15,1901. The new house cost $22,614.
On1/1/1907, Engine Co. 31 was formed in the quarters of H&L 7.

In the summer of 1974 I had the chance to visit this house. In the front was Engine 31. It was a 1973 ALF (one of six) pumper with the Pacemaker cab. It was the first delivery with the fluorescent version of Omaha Orange. Parked behind it was Truck 7, a hand-me-down 1954 800 series open cab ALF 100 foot tiller. An air horn had been added to the outside of the left side jump seat (the mother-in-law seat) about two feet from the chauffeur's left ear.

Sad. Baltimore City population 1970...905,759. 2020...583,132.

However, If you go to dinner in Fells Point, the waitress will still call you 'Hon'.
