A ROTARY CELL PHONE ? (WHY ?).

My Dear Old Dad, was NY Telephone (Remember Them?) for 21Yr.s
He Spent Endless Hours @ Repair of System after Manhattan NY Tel Fire
When I started it was still NY Telephone. Your dad I'm sure was at the 2av CO fire. Alot of our senior guys when I started worked there also. There's a great video on youtube about it and shows alot of 1970's rigs including original Satellite 2. Its called reconnecting 170,00 customers.

I remember reading in a WNYF Magazine that when the initial FDNY companies arrived and they went down into that sub basement area, it was like crawling in between a toaster with rows high stacked burning wires. In addition to that, there was the possibility of electrical shock from high voltage.

That fire occurred on February 27, 1975.

Maybe this is that video that "jtsjc1" is talking about.

This one is the one we were shown in telephone school. The cable vault is where it started I believe the cause was given as a short. At one point I think they tried to flood the vault with foam.

This is when cable splicing was an art. Everyone had a sense of pride about their job. Management knew exactly what needed to be done and they had extensive knowledge of the job. Sad to say things aren't the same.
