Structure Fire:
At 12:10 AM, our department was dispatched to a structure fire in the River Club subdivision. The first unit arrived just six minutes later, facing a well-involved structure with heavy fire showing on three sides and two nearby homes at risk.
We quickly initiated our response. The first engine deployed a 2.5-inch attack line on the main fire and a second 1.75-inch line to protect the exposure, while the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office assisted by clearing residents from the adjacent homes. A second engine secured our water supply by connecting to a hydrant.
Inside the home, search teams swept the first floor and confirmed there were no occupants. It was later learned that the residents were out of town. The fire, however, had completely destroyed the second floor and caused a full roof collapse. With interior operations no longer safe, we shifted to a defensive attack. York County’s Tower 1 and our Quint 3 were crucial in knocking down the fire on the second floor.
All units were clear from the scene and back in service by 3:30 AM. We appreciate the mutual aid provided by York County Department of Fire and Life Safety.
Personnel and Apparatus:
Abingdon Fire: 16 firefighters, 2 Engines, 1 Quint, 1 Medic Unit
York County (Mutual Aid): 1 Battalion Chief, 1 Tower, 2 Engines, 2 Medic Units
