On this date in 1968 I was appointed to the FDNY. I was still in the army while completing all requirements. A month after discharge I was in the academy. I had a great career but was forced to retire after 37 yrs due to medical reasons. Our son Tommie has the same anniversary date 35 yrs later. Remember all who went before us.

Let me also remind our members that "jbendick" and his son Tommie started this web site.
"jbendick" worked some of the busiest FDNY companies during the very busy FDNY War Years.
Starting at Engine 96, then Squad 2, Engine 75, Lt Engine 68, and Captain at Engine 23

His son Tommie as well starting at Engine 65, Lt (?) Ladder 45, Engine 66.
Tommie is now at the ROCK where he plays a key part in training of FDNY Firefighters and Officers - up to Deputy Chiefs I think.

Also a part of that same FDNY 1968 class is this site member "Lt Q".

Another great guy who I believe started out being assigned to Engine 5 on the lower East Side.

He also worked in Brooklyn, including being promoted to Lt and working in the very, very busy Ladder 112 during the height of the busy Bushwick years.

Happy anniversary to all from the 9/14/68 class. I had the luck and pleasure to work with some of them toward the end of their careers. A wealth of knowledge I was glad to try and absorb.

As a member of the 9/14/68 class, I am honored to be associated with some of the greatest firefighters ever. Our class holds the record for being hired in the least amount of time from the written test to being sworn in. Written test in June, proby school September 14. So I want to give a big hello to all my classmates who are left, stay well my brothers, especially Captain John and Chief Jack, love you guys.
