Sad news.  Gary was an interesting guy...passionate about the job and dedicated to being the best fireman he could be. One of the physically strongest men I ever met. He had a different take on things....spent many hours talking to him during my years in L133 and learned a lot from his perspective.  He rarely called me by name...referred to me only as "senior man".  A good man taken too soon.  Rest in Peace, Gary.

In regard to FF Gary Burnette....Gary was a long time FF in LAD*165 originally... when i was the CPT of ENG*275 the first night i met him personally i was working OT in 165 as CPT Willy F was ABC in BN*54...not out of the normal 165 was running like crazy w/the (one of four ) 110 Ft Rear Mount... after several runs which we were on we hit a bump & the aerial broke the cradle above my head & drove it thru the outer skin of the cab roof....after the run we were back at qtrs OOS ....as the Companies changed to the spare
which had a different compartment layout Gary as he carried the generator or other heavy stuff "by himself" would keep asking the LCC Fred K...."Senior Man where do you want this ? ..where do you want that ?" ....at the time i thought he was breaking balls but that was his respectful terminology....awhile later he transferred to 275 where i never had a problem w/him ....when he was on the Knob & worked the Knob to hit Fire he even though he knew the Truckies name he referred to him by his tool assignment like Irons or Hook if he was giving a warning as he operated the Line... he was a bull & although in some guys book he had different theories on certain things he always did the job....one night around 0400 i was finished doing stuff in the office & came downstairs to see who was in the kitchen & i heard "huffing & puffing" near the front of the Rig...it was Gary doing a heavy pushup/situp workout ....i never got anything but respect from the Man who in my book always did the job ....on my last tour in 275 Gary a tee totaler came by w/a few bottles of diet soda & ginger ale..... there used to be a picture floating around South QNS taken by someone which never made it to the media or anyone else of a Fire in St Albans when Gary was still in 165 of him out the second floor window much like the current stance used to exit w/the PSS hooked in w/an ankle & arm...but i mean he was smoking......after i met him i asked about the situation & he said I could not get past the furniture piled up to make the bedroom's so i took my mask off in the living room but when the whole place lit up i went out the window but i knew they would throw a portable before i had to let go..... Back in the early '90s 275 was the last 13*DV Unit to give up the 5th FF ....one night in a snowstorm about 0600 the DV called me & said send the 5th FF to a Harlem ENG...it was Gary who was up for the detail & even though he had a license he never drove anything on or off duty....at the time we had a DV Suburban in qtrs just for this but Gary did not opt to drive it.....i figured if he was taking public trans which was a bus & several subways he might not make it before or close to 0900 so i told him maybe just stay here & i will call the Unit & see if anybody had arrived early because of the snow & he said no Captain (not Cap) it's my detail & i am going so he took public trans up there (not because of getting OT but because it was his turn)... RIP to the Burner.

RET LT RONALD D BILLER  after a battle w/9-11 related cancer......REST IN PEACE BROTHER......THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE BOTH MILITARY (USCG Commander) & FDNY.....PRAYERS FOR THE COMFORT OF THE FAMILIES.....  His funeral was today 9-22-16.

Ronald Dean Biller, 77
U.S. Coast Guard commander, FDNY lieutenant, active member of South Baptist Church of Tottenville
Ronald Dean Biller, 77, a lifelong resident of Tottenville, went Home to be with the Lord on Sept. 18, 2016, after a long illness.
Born in 1939 on Staten Island to Robert Crawford Biller and Evelyn Ruth Biller, he graduated from Tottenville High School in 1956 and later enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve while attending college. In 1963, he married Margaret Mornan. They celebrated their 53rd anniversary on Sept. 14, 2016.
He worked at Anaconda-Jurden as a draftsman and at Sears department stores before being hired by the FDNY in 1967.
He worked in Manhattan (Engine 28/Ladder 11), Brooklyn (Engine 282/ Ladder 148), and Staten Island (Engine 151/Ladder 76) as a firefighter and fire marshal spanning more than a 35-year career before retiring as a lieutenant in 2002 while assigned  to Engine 151. He worked at the World Trade Center site in 1993 and was again called to duty during the 9-11 attacks. His distinctive FDNY career was paralleled by his U.S. Coast Guard service - culminating in a 36-year career while achieving the rank of commander. In 1997, he went back to school and received his bachelor's degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, graduating magna cum laude after a 30-year hiatus.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
