Lawrence J. Yetman
Fireman 3rd Grade, Ladder Co. 132
Fire at 103 Rogers Ave., Brooklyn. Box 954, 4.08 P. M.,
January 8, 1961. 3 Story Frame, Store and Dwelling.
The fire had started beneath stairway from the 1st to 2nd floor, completely burning the stairway out, and had swept to the rear of the 1st floor, and then via the stairwell to the 2nd floor, heavily involving the rear of the second floor apartment. On arrival, the members of Ladder Co. 132 were informed that three children were trapped in the 2nd floor apartment and that several people were on the rear fire escape, afraid to pass flame that was leaping from one of the 2nd floor windows.
Fireman Yetman immediately went to the rear of the building and up the fire escape. Leading several people, and carrying Mrs. Bertha Sammis, age 70, and with a cast on her leg, he returned to the rear yard.
Then, again ascending the fire escape, he entered the 2nd floor window. Crawling because of the intense heat, he searched and finding one of the children unconscious on the floor brought him to the window to the waiting arms of other firemen. Twice more, did Fireman Yetman enter the fierce heat of this apartment, bringing out an unconscious child each time, before he retreated to the safety of the yard.
Fireman Yetman's action was performed before water was on the fire, and the heat on the fire escape was such as to burn the hands of the people who descended it, using the guard rails.
