STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Staten Islander Weston L. Biggs, 82, of Toms River, N.J., a retired FDNY lieutenant, died Saturday at home.
Born in Brooklyn, he was brought to Westerleigh as an infant. In 1955 he moved to West Brighton, and settled in Toms River in 1985.
A graduate of Port Richmond High School, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Krausse from 1952 to 1956.
Mr. Biggs was a New York City police officer for three years in Manhattan before joining the New York City Fire Department as a firefighter. He retired as a lieutenant from Engine Co. 164 in 1986 after 27 years.
Mr. Biggs enjoyed skiing, golfing and traveling with his family. He also enjoyed boating and owned many boats. Mr. Biggs was also a member of the U.S. Power Squadron for 40 years.
"He was a very precise and thorough man with an eye for detail," said his son, Sandy Biggs, "He will be remembered for his simple ways of explaining things and his love for his grandchildren and his willingness to put his family first."
"He was proud that his tradition of the fire department will continue in the family," added his family.
His wife of 57 years, the former Audrey Hendrickson, died in 2011. His daughter, Stacie Biggs, died in 1970. His grandson, Christopher Biggs, died in 2007.
In addition to his son, Sandy, surviving are a daughter, Dr. Kathleen Biggs, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
