ANOTHER WAR YEARS VET PASSES.

In the early morning of Sept 12 ( after 911 ) , I was at Vesey St Command Post . It was about 2 AM I think . It was apparent we had lost many FFs and we were not likely to recover them. Chief S. Sansone ( Safety ) and Chief Tom Schoales ( B15 ) came by. We were talking a long time. There was a calmness and serenity with them both. The next day, the missing FF list came out. Both their sons were on it. ( FF Schoales E 4, FF Sansone E 54 ) I didn't know it at the time. Both chiefs never said a word about their sons. It is a memory burnt into my brain .
 
I would see Chief Sal at the various breakfasts and would usually BS for a period of time reminiscing about the good old times . He never mentioned his son being a victim of 911. Another case in point as a retiree and going to as many funerals possible, I would hear a name and never associate with someone I worked with. Some names were fairly common in FDNY and I was devastated when at FF Sweeney's funeral I learned it was Lt. Sweeney from 227's son.
 
The Morris Avenue family regretfully announces the death of Ret. Capt. Nick Deluca (D-7).

Nick was appointed to the FDNY on 1/4/1964 and assigned to E-248 (1964-1976).

He was promoted from L-121 (in 1976) and spent his time as a Lieutenant in L-44 from 1976-1987.

While in L-44, "Uncle Nick" was known as a GREAT company officer who was a pleasure to work with - a man who kept his calm, and was always willing to share his knowledge with the brothers, while chomping on a cigar, or while standing in the bucket fighting a fire alongside his firefighters.

He was promoted to Capt. from L-44 and bounced in the old 9th division and 7th until he retired in 1990.

The thoughts and prayers of the E92/L44/B17 Family - are with the entire Deluca family.

The War year ranks are thinning at an alarming rate. No one left to talk about the 30-40 run night tours, eating on the run and maybe a relocation thrown in for good measure and of course a good vacant building fire to keep firefighting skills up to par. In Brooklyn, early in the AM being on the roof and being able to see JFK Airport to the east and seeing Coney Island to the west.
 
I knew Nick when he was assigned as a probie to E 248. Watched him grow as a firefighter over the years. Was a great nozzleman at E 248. Always a hard worker. RIP Nick. I rode with the company from 1964 to 1973.
