The fact that they’re not really telling people what’s going on is very disturbing

Unconfirmed reports I saw say that during a life fire exercise (military not firefighting) a natural gas well was struck. The resulting explosion levelled at least one building and lit an ammunitions depot which led to more explosions. It also spread to a grass fire that was fueled by 80km/h (maybe 50ish mph) winds that extended beyond the base.

Wainwright is a very small town and the closest trauma hospital is 200km away. Very rural and not a lot of EMS resources. Ground ambulances from hours away responded. 3 medical helicopters responded and many fixed wing air ambulances.
