"While returning home from the EMS Academy late on the night of June 29, Probationary EMS Trainee Juan Osorno Garces came upon a multi-vehicle collision involving an overturned bus on the Long Island Expressway in Queens.
He was there before any first responders had arrived on scene and knew he needed to stop and immediately provide care. Without hesitation, Garces assessed victims, provided care to a critically injured patient trapped inside a vehicle, and remained at the scene assisting with triage as responding fire and EMS units treated more than 20 patients.
"Without a doubt, I immediately felt the need to help," he recalled. "This was all made possible through the vigorous training performed at the EMS Academy, along with my former experience as an FDNY Cadet. The credit belongs to every member who responded."
Probationary EMS Trainee Garces' actions reflect the dedication, professionalism and instincts instilled in every member of the FDNY, demonstrating that the call to serve begins long before graduating from the EMS Academy."
