On Thursday, March 2nd just before 1am, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to a reported building fire next to the firehouse on Grand Ave. Engine 203 was quickly on scene finding smoke showing and after initial searches by Baldwin units, fire was located in the basement and a Signal 10 was transmitted by 1st Assistant Chief Hopkins [2051]. The initial line was stretched into the basement to extinguish the fire with at least 4 lines stretched throughout the operation. Numerous crews worked together to locate any additional fire which was found to have extended to the upper floors. With the assistance of crews from Oceanside, Long Beach, Freeport, and Rockville Centre, the fire was placed under control in approximately 90 minutes. Over 15 residents were displaced due to the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
