A gas leak prompted a hazmat response and the evacuation of three buildings on Beacon Hill in Boston Tuesday morning.

Gas leaked into a building on Grove Street from outside, causing elevated readings, Boston police said. Boston police and fire were on scene by 11 a.m. Tuesday. Police were awaiting response from Boston Water and Sewer.

The odor had dissipated. Companies using air quality monitor have determined that the buildings are clear and all residents can go back into their buildings.

BFD Hazmat 1 is located at Engine 22. Staffing usually is 4 members on Engine 22 and 1 additional driver for Hazmat rig - all Hazmat technicians. There are also 4 BFD companies with Hazmat trained members who would respond with Hazmat 1 for incidents according to Hazmat level. Companies are: E 33, L15, E 16, L 53. BFD also has Hazmat Tango specialists who respond to Hazmat incidents as special called.
