Effective 6/17/2014 Boston will no longer be "beeping" boxes out ove the radio.

A tradition passes.  It's value could be debated till the cows come home.

Does anyone have an idea as to how alarms will be broadcas over the radio?

Its the end of an era for the BFD. I expect other surrounding departments that still use the beep will continue (i.e., Somerville). I assume BFD's FAO will just announce the Box as usual, but without the beeps, i.e. "In District _, Striking Box...", or they may even add what most smaller departments do, i.e. "Attention Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Ladder 1, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, and Car 1...Respond to..."

Today is the last day for the beeping out the boxes. From what I was told the other day when I was up there companies will still be dispatched on channel 5 but no boxes beeping. The computer is going to dispatch the companies by their station and not location. It sounded to me the the experienced dispatcher was being taken out of the equation by technology.
