Box 3425 Major Gas Leak

Major gas leak reported Vicinity Waring and Bronxwood Aves
Several incidents initially reported as a water main, fire, and gas leak. it was actually a major gas leak at that intersection. Numerous Homes evacuated. many units on the scene including
E's. 97 90 62 66 38 88  S61 S41 R3 L's 41 51 38 58 probaly 32 Bn's 15 27. Maybe more.
Gas valve located and shut down.

Something like this can go bad in the blink of an eye like what happened in Jamaica, Queens on Jan. 13th, 1967.

And, for a good half hour, it sounded like it had the potential to be just that. Don't know who shut the valve down, CONED or FDNY, But kudos to whoever.
Interesting situation Regarding the assignment of squads. 61 assigned on the box 3d due, 41, by protocol, the assigned squad. When 61 was ordered 10 -8, the officer requested reassignment as the squad but the dispatcher stayed with the protocol. Since 61 was already helping with the evacuations, they were put back on the box. This is not a criticism. Sounded like all parties were thinking through the problem and ultimately acted correctly. Very professional. But then, This is the FDNY.
