I jst finished reading "Fire Strikes the Chicago Stockyards, a history of flame and folly in the jungle."Although I am from Boston this is a good read on the Chicago Fire Dept. Basically the book is divided into three sections. The first is a history from 1834 until December 22, 1910. It obviously includes the Great Chicago Fire. It also concentrates on the building of the Stockyards. Second section concerns the fire on December 22, 1910. A collapsing wall killed 21 members of the Department including Chief Horan. Until 9-11 this was the largest loss of life by an organized department at once incident. The third section covers 1911 until the yards closing in 1971 including a fire in 1934 that became a 5-11 and 13 special calls involving every company in the city, 133 units. From 1889 to 1971 CFD responded to 292 extra alarms, most of them serious and many more fires that were contained. This in an area 2 miles by 1 mile. Anyone want to read it, drop me a PM or E-Mail. I will pay the postage to get it to you, you pick up the return. Grumpy Grizzly
