Fire in a 1 1/2 story building on far south side of Chicago.
Batt. 23 was still chief and requested a box after the fire flashed over.

Chief ordered all members out of the building and a roll call occured.

An EMS Plan 1 was called in shortly after, sending 5 ambulances to the fire.

Firefighters found a 74 year old lady in the kitchen of the house. she did not survive.

In the flashover, 3 firefighters were hurt and in serious condition with burns. 2 are still in the hospital but in stable condition as of 12:00 friday morning

there were a few more then that also.

almost every fire in this cold weather goes to a box. 2 out of 3 hydrants are frozen so extra man power is sent to find water.

there was a 2-11 alarm also today 01/16/09 no details.

as was said chicago has had some real cold weather. multiple days with below zero weather, yesterday with the wind chill was below -20 for the fire with members hurt.

What's a still and a box in Chicagoland?  ("Still alarm" in NY is a report of a fire that has been extinguished)

A still is a report of a fire, usual response is 2 engines, 2 trucks, and a BC. If it is a confirmed fire a squad company, and a command van are added. A still and box is comporable to FDNY 10-75. Additional response is 2 engines, an additional ladder usually a tower ladder if not already assigned a RIT truck and additional chiefs and support trucks such as ambulance etc,. More info can be found at Chicago 5-11 Club web site, just do a search for it :)
