Just compared the Chief of Department sleeve stripes. Chief Hodgens had five, the present COD Chief Esposito at an Fire Prevention conference today only had four stripes. Any explanation as to the difference ?

Did you notice any other differences after your comparison ? It's very subtle.

One hint, has nothing to do with the cuff striping. It’s on the main part of the jacket and is different than any other officer in the job. The COD uniform in fact is the only one to have it.

Bingo ! In addition the COD has 12 buttons and all other offices have only 10.
To clarify - top to bottom: six rows with two buttons in each row with additional spacing between rows two and three, and between rows four and five.

Now for some crazy reason I have to find out why. Is it because that’s the way it’s always been ?, Does it signify anything specific other than it being a COD uniform ?, I figure if anyone knows anything it’s someone on this site so I’ll just wait and see what else turns up.

Chief Esposito is only ACTING Chief of Department as this time therefore he still has 4 stripes on his sleeve. When he. as I hope he will Formally PROMOTTED to Chief of Department he will were 5 stripes on his sleeve. WHO's who in the upper ranks of the FDNY changes all the time.

I lost track of the fact that Chief Esposito was promoted to Chief of Dept. He is a good man who have had the honor to meet. I still work for the FDNY as a Peer Counselor for the WTC Health Treatment Program/Counseling Service Unit. So, I still try to keep up on the "Jobs" coming and goings and I missed this one.
