So CFD has sole function EMTs? Do you know their ambulances staffing?
Yes, ambulances are medical only. At fire scenes they are responsible for treatment and transport of patients as well as firefighter rehab. Each is staffed with 2 people and is staffed 24/7.

Cincinnati is actually backwards from a lot of fire departments in that a fire engine or ladder truck responds to every medical emergency and is responsible for initial care of the patient. An ambulance may be dispatched at same time as the engine or ladder or may be requested at the scene and begins care of the patient when they are loaded onto stretcher or into ambulance.

All CFD Medic units are staffed with 1 FF/EMT & 1 FF/Medic. All fire apparatus are staffed with FF/EMT's and at least 1 FF/Medic making all in service companies ALS. CFD formerly sent an engine on all medic calls and then they would call for a medic unit or when they expanded to ALS & BLS ambulance to which ever was needed. Now pretty much the norm is the engine and closest medic unit is dispatched on medical calls. If it there are no medic units are available and serious in nature, they will request M/A from Hamilton County units or Covington or Newport in Northern Kentucky, location dependent. If it is not serious in nature, the engine or possibly the ladder will wait on scene until a CFD medic unit becomes available. Much easier now that NKY has gone 800 MHz to communicate with CFD.
