For the first time in who knows how long, the Cincinnati Fire Department has a brand new engine company. In information from Cincinnati Fire Apparatus on Facebook, CFD created Engine 235 out of station 35 on November 4. On November 13, it was renumbered as Engine 1. It was created to be temporary but the department hopes to make it permanent to keep up with the demand on the west side of town. Engine 1 last served Cincinnati in 1964 before the company was disbanded. The number was later used for the Village of Arlington Heights until the department was disbanded.

That is great news. Metro Nashville needs at least 5 new companies due to growth in the downtown core and the eastern and western stretches of the city. 39 engines and 12 ladder companies just don't cut it.

The last brand new Engine was organized in 1914. What is most unusual is a new unit for fire duty rather than for EMS. It is also being established in the the city's newest firehouse which was moved over a mile from its original neighborhood less than 10 years ago.

Engine 1 went into service with a 2003 E One Cyclone II 1500 GPM pumper w/500 gallon tank.

I'm well familiar with the station and the old station. I went to school from kindergarten through 8th grade in the 35s area and in kindergarten we took a field trip to the old station, which was just a single engine at the time. And my personal view is that Cincinnati needs more medics (ambulances) and Ladder trucks. Officials only seem to think about how far the first due is and not about how far the second or third due is which matters.
