5-1208 for 4700 Berwyn House Rd. in College Park---less than a block from CPVFD 812

7 story building under construction.  Floors 1 and 2 are masonry the rest is wood frame.  Doubtful that  sprinklers are in service.  Standpipes are available

Companies from PG, Montgomery, Howard, Anne Arundel and I believe DC are operating and/or transferred into PG.

Most Baltimore and DC TV stations have live feeds

At the 2 hour 20 minute mark Command reported 5 ladder pipes in operation 6th one being set up. At least 6 hand lines seem to be in operation.  Command reported heavy fire in "C" Wing and believe it or not we are making progress.

Montgomery E-712-837 and DCFD E-23 and 21 PG T-812 (and another unit) to meet at E-809 with the DCFD Deputy Fire Chief moving to the 7th floor  1251.

While FDNY has had five alarm fires for generations, even multiple simultaneous five alarm fires, many other fire departments across the country are being faced with their first five alarm incidents.

The challenge is multi story, wood frame apartment buildings, under construction.  New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kansas, Texas, and California have all had recent experiences.

This was Prince George?s County?s first five alarm fire.  Five adjacent counties and the District of Columbia provided companies to the fire and for coverage.  Similar to FDNY?s boro calls, the Nation?s Capital Area fire services have had an extensive automatic aid system in place since the 1960?s.

It should also be noted - that the response on higher alarms in most other cities is much less then the FDNY response on higher alarms.

This is reminiscent of some of the Brooklyn Navy Yard fires back in the 60's, 70's, 80's.
