Two dozen Boston Police officers are shedding the blue for the red this year, switching over to Boston Fire in an unusually large swing among the city’s first responders.

Data provided by the city shows that 24 Boston cops have transferred to the fire department in 2022, enrolling in the academy to become firefighters. That’s compared to four, zero, six and one over the previous four years.

On the flip side, only one Boston jake became a city cop.

Very common in NYC for years for NYPD to rollover to FDNY....I only know of 2 who went the opposite......1 was in my proby class (& actually wound up with my Fathers old Badge number) & about 9 months later went back to NYPD....the other I did not know personally but supposedly he was in love with a FFs Widow who did not want to chance marrying & loosing another FF so he resigned & joined NYPD.

In Massachusetts, transit to PDs was common because of OT available with mandatory police details (construction, events, etc) throughout state. POs made a lot more than FFs. There are obviously factors now more important than pay which are causing so many POs nationwide to leave their profession or retire early. Too bad - law enforcement officers are undeservedly treated poorly, harassed, taken for granted, attacked, shot at and not supported by politicians.

It’s more common than you think around the country. Two members of the Broward Sheriffs Office SWAT team rolled over to Broward Fire Rescue. Both had 6-7 years on the job prior to the move.
