GM has issued a recall of some 23,000 Corvette models ZO6 and ZR1 which cost over $100,000 each for fires while refueling. This is either justice or a terrible injustice.
The cause was determined to be a two step event- and the Corvette was not the root issue, The fire would start when a defective gas station fuel pump would not shut off automatically properly resulting in a spill. These two Corvette models had a cooling fan which will run even after the ignition has been turned off. This ,in turn, would blow spilled gas vapor on the hot engine.
These cars are the fastest (up to 233mph) ever produced by GM. At 342 feet per second, it turns out you still can't outrun a propagating gasoline flame.
