Heavy column of smoke seen from 5 miles away from where a 26 X 60 Log Home was fully involved on arrival of the Farmville FD and Randolph District FD. This was down a very long dirt driveway more than 1/4 mile off Mahan Road. FFD laid all their supply line and came up short. Randolph Engine 42 completed the lay in as the Cumberland FD supplied water. The Prospect FD was called for manpower as the mid 90 degree heat taxed the firefighters. Fire operations lasted 6 hours. The Virginia State Police were called for investigation. At 0740 hours on August 20th the Randolph District FD spent another 4 hours on the scene wetting down rekindles and shoveling out debris and looking for a possible body. The Cumberland County sheriff's Office finally located the person who was hiding.
