Chief John W. Heaney from the 5th Battalion was involved in another famous Manhattan fire earlier in the 1940's in which he would re-enter a building in Mid-Town after a Captain was discovered missing. At the time, he was a Captain assigned to HQ's staff. He was able to locate and remove the unconscious Captain. For this, he was awarded the James Gordon Bennett Medal in 1942 and the Dr. Harry M. Archer Medal in 1945. In 1983 his grandson, FF. Kevin D. Heaney, Ladder Co. 120, would be awarded the Albert S. Johnston Medal for a rescue on Pacific Street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. The Tradition obviously Continued!
