DIX HILLS, NY — A Dix Hills house caught fire on Tuesday night, Suffolk police said.
A firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital, as several fire departments responded to Calumet Drive around 10 p.m., according to public information officer Steve Silverman. The home was under renovation and no one was inside, police said.
Firefighters were met with heavy fire on the first and second floors and through the roof of the two-story home, Silverman said. Firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze inside the home and were able to douse a large volume of fire in a short period. About 60 firefighters using nine trucks brought the blaze under control within 40 minutes. Dix Hills Fire Department was assisted by the Deer Park, Melville, Wyandanch and Greenlawn fire departments at the scene, with standby coverage from the Commack FD and Commack VAC.
One firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital by the Dix Hills Rescue Squad and was treated and released. Suffolk County Fire-Rescue Coordinators responded and provided help. Police are investigating the cause of the fire but said it does not "appear suspicious."
