Aircraft Incident – 8636 S. Peoria St.
At 6:24 a.m. on September 5, 2025, Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and South Metro Fire Rescue responded to reports of an explosion near Peoria Street and Aviator Way in unincorporated Douglas County.
Upon arrival, SMFR’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) apparatus RED 2 and SMFR Safety 2 located a fully downed aircraft with heavy fire at 8636 S. Peoria St., outside the boundaries of Centennial Airport.
RED 2 carries 1,500 gallons of water, 210 gallons of foam, and 500 gallons of Purple-K dry chemical agent. Firefighters used approximately 750 gallons of water, flowing at 175 gallons per minute, to extinguish the fire. This quick action prevented the flames from spreading to a nearby building and multiple diesel-powered generators.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed two fatalities believed to be occupants of the aircraft. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office will identify the victims and notify their families. Our condolences are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation.
If you have surveillance video or photos of this event, please email them to eyewitness@ntsb.gov.
Thanks to Centennial Airport, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, NTSB, and The FAA for their assistance.
The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details are available at this time.
