Was that the typical manning for an  engine company in 1910?

Each unit had a captain, lieutenant, several engineers of steamer, and 7 or 8 firemen. (May I use that term, I don't know if there were any fire persons in the department at that time? They worked 23 hours a day for six days before getting a day off .
That meant that most of the membership was in the firehouse at any given time. The one hour meal leave meant that they had to live within a few blocks of quarters.

Sorry to disappoint; I am not in that terrific picture.  Nor do I go back to the horse era as Willie D would like you think.  1964 does seem like a long time ago.

Just think of the apoplexy you'd put the union guys into if some yahoo suggested that we go back to that kind of schedule in order to increase available manpower (never mind what the members would say.
