Effective Tuesday March 19, 2013, the quarters of Staten Island Engine Company 162/Ladder Company 82/Battalion 23 on Nelson ave, in Great Kills, will be having their floor ripped up and redone. They're expected to be out of the house for 8 months(city time that should equate to 39 months.)

In the interim, Engine 162 will be moving in with Engine 167/Ladder 87 in Annadale, Ladder 82 will be moving in with Engine 165/Ladder 85 in New Dorp and the 23 Battalion will be bunking with Engine 168 in Rossville.

Wow! That's some long distances especially for L82 and where are they going to put their rig? ??? E165 & TL85 have no indoor room for another ladder truck.

E 168 in Rossville would mean long runs for the 23 Bn.  E 164/L 84 would seem to be better, if there is room.

I always thought that E 167/L 87 in Annadale would be a good location for the chief to cover the 23rd Bn. The 23rd Bn is big.  The Nelson Ave firehouse is close to to Hylan Blvd but does not have a central location. E 167 has the Richmond Pkwy/Arthur Kill Rd/Richmond Ave network.

Work has been completed for the 23 Bn in our quaters. E 167 quaters is being retrofitted for E 162 as we speak and Tl85 quaters as well. L82 will be stored outside in the side lit where the haz-mat rig is currently

Joeyengine, do you know what E165 is using as a haz-mat rig currently? I heard that they lost their Fregihtliner/LDV rig.

Joeys right. The frieightliner is still there, though in the next two years, expect a new second piece that looks more like an engine. The frieightliner will go behind 82 during its stay.

Joeyengine & NYBravest82 thanks for the info. So in the future Haz Mat 2nd pieces will no longer be bread trucks? This engine like look means that hazmat rigs will be the same as Haz Mat 1's second piece?

Drove by the house today and the hazmat second piece is on the chauffeurs side. With the way they are situated it seems like either truck will get in or out regardless of the other vehicle.

The 23rd Bn has been in Great Kills since it was formed and the firehouse is custom made for a chief with the extra bay and office.  Hylan Blvd provides excellent response going north to New Dorp or South to Tottenville.  But is it still the best location within the 23rd battalion for the chief?

When the 23rd went into service, most of the population on the southern half of SI was located along the Hylan Blvd and Amboy Rd corridors.  In the past 25 years, there has been tremendous development all over the South Shore.  If you were placing the 23rd Bn in the best place without being influenced by tradition and history, where would you locate it?

E162/L82 (Great Kills) - that's where it always has been - good accommodations - rapid Hylan Blvd response - not centrally located within bn response area - long runs into Tottenville, Rossville etc
E168 (Rossville) - where they are currently responding from - new firehouse - good accommodations - access to Expressways - not centrally located within bn response area
E167/L87 (Annadale) - more centrally located in bn response area - access to Richmond Ave/Arthur Kill Rd/highway
E164/L84 (Huguenot) more centrally located in bn response area - access to highway - good response to growing South Shore population
Another firehouse in bn?  Maybe a new firehouse in the South Shore?

The 23rd Bn has the largest bn response area in NYC.  SI still has the same 3 battalions that it had 75 years ago - and the population has grown maybe 5 or 6 times what it was back then. Traffic will only get worse.  SI is going to need a 4th battalion chief in the not to distant future (also a squad and maybe another engine or ladder, too).  Many cities/counties with 500,000 populations have more fire units than SI. If SI gets a 4th battalion (24th), where would you put them?

Wow, a new 24th Bn. would be cool, interesting idea. I think the best location for a new SI battalion would be in Tottenville, housed with E 151 / TL 76. The 23rd Bn. Does have a very Long ride to the Tottenville/Rossville Area of SI, and new Bn. to fill in the gap would be interesting. The 23 would still have a rather large response area.

I actually am in Minneapolis for a few days right now. I stopped by one of the local houses for the area I am in and talked about the difference between FDNY and here. The interesting thing is they may physically have more stations and companies, but they are understaffed. Engines are running with three people now as opposed to four. It was either they did that or closed/blacked out companies. In the end, both SI and Minneapolis would fall with the same shortage. One in terms of overall companies and the other in terms of manpower. I know it's far from the topic at hand, but thought it was interesting to share remembering this post.
