Engine 165 to Squad 165

A squad is an enhanced engine so they would respond as engines on regular assignments.and I think this is more than a "kitchen table rumor", spoke to someone who actually works in this house and its 99% gonna happen

Ill believe Staten Island will get its own squad company when I see it. There is plenty of land available to build a new fire house  and and put a new squad 169 in it. Clearly squad 169 will be better than taking an engine company and making it into a squad.

Reading thru the discussion here, it seems that New Sqd.169 on S.I., @ at a New House,
would be the Most Logical & Responsive Solution to the S.I. Squad Dilemma.
That Said, just because the 169 Idea Makes the Most Sense, & is Most Responsive to S.I.'s Need
doesn't necessarily mean that Sqd.169 would be FDNY's solution.  ::)

To be very honest with all the non FDNY members and non city residences ( no I'll harm against anyone), it will be very cost effective to turn an already HAZ-MAT engine  that's already is making 12% more than regular members into a squad , rather than making a completely new unit with a completely new house...its not in the city budget. So with that said its just easier to train the members of that unit some extra rescue techniques...(they don't need the hazmat porition). Being a resident of Staten island and having transfered to the island I welcome the new Squad.

OK Joeyengine ....now this makes sense to me ...i had completely forgot about the fact that 12 % was already in play in the HM ENG.....to me in the City's eyes another 12% Unit would be the biggest stumbling block but as you pointed out it is already being paid so this may certainly fly.

The best post on this subject  - Joeyengine makes excellent points.

Engine 165 is to get 2014 Seagrave 1000 gpm rescue-pumper later this year. The company will remain a Hazmat-Technician unit (together with Engines 44, 250, and 274), and is not to be converted to a squad company.

"HCO", there has been some very good points presented here on this subject. I assume that you know why E 165 is NOT scheduled to become a Squad Company. And certainly if the cost is the same, why would this idea be rejected ? I really don't have any say at all in it, but it all sounded pretty good to me.

Can you fill us in ? Is there a reason why this should not happen ?

Could this be the start of something new? Maybe like a "hybrid squad"?

Bottom line is no one really truly seems to know...all we have is rampant speculation.

O.K., Got It... I'm not a FDNY Member; I'm Born & Raised BKLYN,[30 yrs.], & Lived & Worked in Manh. 3Yrs.. (Security @ Sty Town - Peter Cooper Vil., & World Fin.Center). I was Fortunate, thru Friends in Years Past who were Fortunate Themselves in Achieving appointment
to FDNY, to share their FDNY Experience w/me, which resulted in a host of Friends on
The Department. True enuff' that I no longer reside in N.Y.C, and haven't Rode a FDNY Rig
in 15 or so Yr.s. That all said, I Endorsed the 'Sqd.169' Idea, as Most Responsive to the Fire
& Emerg. Med. Needs of S.I 's Citizens.
Due to my lack of Current Exp. w/ FDNY, I was not aware of a Haz-Mat Eng. Co. on S.I. [?].
And I agree that Transforming a Haz-Mat Co. into a Sqd., makes fine sense practically, and
Financially. The only issue left to resolve after that [ i think?], is Location.
Thanks Joeyeng., for your very informative & practical input.

There was speculation a while back on this site that all hazmat tech engines would be receiving rescue pumpers (squad type body's) to help carry there growing inventory of hazmat Equiptment when there rigs came up for replacement. It's sure seems like Staten Island can use a squad as well as a couple engines and trucks and Battalion with the growth of SI it's going to get busier and busier, but with budgets getting smaller and smaller it will be tough to find the money for expansion, permanent relocations from other Burroughs are not the answer either, maybe with this new mayor someone with influence from SI can get his ear and convince him the additional needs that are growing every year. It's not fair to Brooklyn to have to send company's to Staten Island for relocation all time when there's jobs because there's no depth in resources on SI. If there is a big job in Brooklyn, like a 10-60 or something that rescue 5 is operating at and utilizing multiple squads and rescues as well as SOC trucks and something happens on Staten Island that requires a collapse task force or special resources, they are looking at way to long on scene without the required resources. With all the construction that goes with expansion, accidents are inevitable.

Fair or Not; the Burden frequently falls to Bklyn to meet S.I.'s Demand, Case in point:
It seems that this morning's S.I. 2nd wreaked havoc on Brooklyn South's Btn. Chief
Deployment - 40,42,43,48, [ an Entire Division !], and 32 Battalions Responded. I wasn't
On-Air, So I dnk what the Redeployment was to Cover Brooklyn South.  :-\

HCO - Was that a Department announcement?

Per a facebook comment associated with pics of the new rig.

"I am the union delegate for Ladder 85. We share the house with E 165. E 165 is not becoming a squad. They are getting a squad pumper as requested from E 165's captain for the extra haz-mat equipment they need to carry. I repeat they are not becoming a squad, rumor put to rest, thanks for everyone's interest!"

Yep this is correct I worked in that house the other day and spoke to the captain of E165 and he confirmed it. The engine is NOT going squad they are just getting a squad style rig to fit all of the hazmat hear

My source was a former member of Sq18 who stated they were to go in serve 7/1/14. He turned out to be wrong.
