After the line is turned off, does the chauffeur have to let some water out of the tank until they come back outside of the building? With the hydrant on, water is still filling the tank. How does this work?

There is a tank fill valve on the pump panel to open and close the tank supply. If he were using the hydrant supply he would probably not have the "Tank To Pump" valve open. Once the discharge gate to the line in question is shut down the nozzle can be cracked to drain some water and the ECC can open the corresponding drain on the pump panel as well. I think have that right.

Our Company had an experimental air operated hose drain in the seventies. It was a tee connection outside the shutoff. The top had a quick connect connection to where we attached the air hose normally used to fill the can. The nozzleman opened the nozzle in the street and when the line was charged with air, almost all of the water in the line was flushed out. It worked pretty good but was taken back several months later.

lucky that was probably the O'Rielly fitting....we had one in R*2 ...it had a variety of possible uses ....in a Fire/collapse situation if Members on the Nozzle end did not need water but needed air this could be used to exhaust the water & provide them air until they could be rescued (provided the Line was not completely crushed in the collapse) also it could be used to fill a length of hose that was coupled to itself to provide a giant life ring for persons in the water.....also if hooked up at the Rig discharge in a situation where an operating Line had to be quickly repositioned say to another floor it could blow the water out to make it easier to reposition the Line....it really was not used much though.
