The Fairfield (CT) FD responded to a report of a structure fire at the Carolton Nursing Home at 400 Mill Plain Road.  The fire had started on the exterior and communicated inside the facility.  One wing of the nursing home was evacuated.  Town police shut down Mill Plain Road as well as the southbound exit of I-95 at Exit 21.  FFD had a full response of five engines, one ladder, and one rescue.  Westport FD responded with one ladder for mutual aid.  Bridgeport FD covered some Fairfield stations during the fire.  The fire was under control in 30 minutes with units on scene for over two hours.

Bridgeport relocated an Engine and a Truck, but had to return to that city as there was a job there on River St. (not far from the New Dispatch Center). In addition, Stratford relocated Engine 2, Milford relocated  Engine 7 and Tower 1, and later Fairfield relocated Their Engine 2 to Bridgeport's Engine12.

This is the first time I could EVER remember Milford relocating to Bridgeport. I'm talking like my life time of 61 years that I know of. I'm sure with budget cuts, we can expect to see a lot more of this in the future.

I've also heard word that the entire Bridgeport area is in the process of setting up Task Forces of two Engines, One Truck to respond as a single unit. I don't remember where I heard this but that entire Southwest Ct shore line area is supposed to be involved. As an example Task Force 1 could be an Engine from Fairfield, one from Stratford, and a ladder from Milford.

I remember in The late 70's when the brothers at fairfield Engine 2 (I believe that's the one on Jennings Rd) made up paper shields for their helmets that read "Bridgeport FD 4A" for all the time they spent relocating across the border to the West Side.
Bridgeport was like a mini South Bronx back then.

For some stories of the Bridgeport, Ct Fire Dept during their busy years go to: www.ctfire-ems.com . Click on Ct Fire Dept General Forums, then go down to "Bridgeport's War Years". And yes, it was a mini South Bronx back then.
