Definitely some good stuff on ebay and most people are reputable however, be careful as there are plenty of jokers on there who like to put "New York" on their listings when the items are not authentic.
This is part of a very old FDNY alarm box....what is missing is the outer cover....it was known as a "double action" box since to activate it you would turn a crank on the outer cover then open the door & then pull down the handle which you see in the picture....these were all replaced by some point in the '60s w/the more familiar "Pull Handle" type boxes....the problem w/ the "double action" ones were that if a person did not (or could not" read the instructions & only twisted the outside handle/crank & heard the bell ring (to alert people in the area) then did not open the door & actually transmit the Alarm from inside nothing was sent to the FDNY........ http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-ACME-FIRE-ALARM-CALL-BOX-NYC-TELEGRAPH-NOT-GAMEWELL-/161033314737?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item257e5561b1
