One sad factor in the loss of these 3 brave Firefighter was the use of oil-based artist paint to paint a mural up the stairway in the Watts St. building.
Once the fire got out into the hallway it spread very rapidly up the stairs and hallways due to the flammability of the artist paint used.
Also note there are in fact 6 Degrees of burn injury. Degreee1 ,2 & 3, burns, all of us should already be familiar with. 4th degree Burns involve the all the skins layers PLUS the Fat Tissue under the skin. 5th Degree burns involve all the skin layers, PLUS the fat tissue and also MUSCLE tissue.
6th Degree Burns include all layers of the skin, fat tissue, muscle tissue AND also BONE. Deeper burns such as this are not common burns, but can be seen in electrical burns, lightning strikes (May also include Fern Burns), burns from Welding and Chemical Burns &/or prolonged contact with very hot flames. All 3rd Degree Burns or Greater are all treated the same as 3rd Degree Burns both in the field and at a Burn Center. I did outreach for the Westchester County Burn Center at one time, as well as helping the NY Firefighters Burn Center. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired
