Will these be disposed of once all the new Marauder II Tower Ladders are delivered so the 1999-2000 will become spares ?

Although they're not easy on the eyes these 94/94 "Rhinoscopes" have been dependable workhorses. ;)

They work, this is true....but it's a pretty awful rig to ride around in.  Staring at the black vinyl as you face backwards, sitting in the middle of the rig, is hardly a good way to get a glance at the building as you're getting getting to the box.  It's also tough to put your mask on without elbowing the guy next to you in the mush....

Are the Rhinoscopes the ones with the jack in the front center of the rig ? If so, the name kind of fits them. And weren't they the first group of Seagrave Tower Ladders to come into service, after those Tough Rugged Macks.

Yes they are and believe they are the first ones

The first of these were actually delivered with straight flat bumpers but they were modified with the ends tapered in. This reduced the chances of clipping parked cars and other things while turning in tight situations.

Yeah, but they never put any blue lights on the back.  ::) ;D

When I was a kid growing up in Brooklyn the only city vehicles with a blue light on the back were the gray NYC Dept. of Sanitation trucks ...

69mets....i remember the blue light on the Sanitation Trucks......a fellow who was a Buff gave me one....i had it on one my ALF Tiller Rigs in LAD*108 back in the day....it was a real quality piece....the bulb  actually had a rounded face & was clear.....the separate blue lens was rounded plastic....the body of the light & the bracket was made of brass.

Chief,

Why did the sanitation trucks have this blue light?

It was in the rear center of the DS truck above the single hopper they had at the time....it was very bright so it would attract attention to the men working in the rear ....similar to the 3 lights they have now......as to why it was blue i would imagine someone in the DS thought it was more attention getting than red & yellow ........the DS did phase these out as they got newer trucks.........odd that 40 something years later it is being an accepted theory.

Many new fire engines/trucks are getting away from red and white lights in the rear as they as distracting to on-coming traffic.  Some units have lights that shut down after the parking brake is set.  Amber and blue seem to be preferable.

Chief ... I wonder if that light was manufactured by Jullian McDermott in Long Island City ... He used to supply the heavy duty mechanical 'can type' flashers and single facing lights for much of F.D.N.Y.'s fleet for many years. Now all his housings are plastic, but in the 60's and 70's they were metal with a heavy duty, adjustable brass bracket. The lenses were colored plastic that allowed a lot of light through ... the red lens was so bright it appeared to be almost pink when lighted by the clear sealed beam behind it.

As many New Yorkers know, the NYC Transit Buses now also have blue lights that flash as the bus stops.

I thought all the TL's with the single jack on the front bumper were Baker's I was told by a friend of mine that works in the shops that they originally had 2 jacks on the bumper but the windshields would pop out so the solution was to move the jack to the middle
