Oldest five firehouses - year built:

E 26 Manhattan - 1860
E 5 Manhattan - 1864
E 44 Manhattan - 1881
E 218 Brooklyn - 1887
E 226 Brooklyn - 1889

Note - E 5 was organized a month before E 26 as FDNY companies in 1865.  Both firehouses were built and used by volunteer companies prior to FDNY organization.  E 26's firehouse was built in 1860.  E 5's firehouse in 1864.  Both have claims to "oldest" FDNY firehouse.

Thanks Mack. The above is some excellent history of the oldest FDNY firehouses. If they could only talk.

If anybody is looking for the oldest still working firehouse in Connecticut I believe we have it located in Norwich, Ct. It is called "The Greenville Hilton" and there's a short little poem that goes with it.

"The big old red building built in 1896, it's location North Main St, number 446".

It is a two bay firehouse three stories high.

If you're ever in the neighborhood, stop in and tell'em Willy D sent you.

Bill, I think "The Greenville Hilton" is the oldest operating firehouse in the state of Connecticut.

FDNY LADDER 102 "BEDFORD EXPRESS" RESPONDING

The reason Batt 34 moved to E209 from 1946 to 1950 was that E230's firehouse at 59 Ellery St. was going to be demolished because it was in the middle of what would become the NYCHA Marcy Houses. During that period E230 was temporarily housed at L102's firehouse while their new firehouse was constructed and completed. ;)

From "Our Firemen - The Official History of the Brooklyn Fire Dept"

- - TRUCK COMPANY NO. 3, THE MEN WHO FIGHT AT CLOSE QUARTERS.

Truck Company No. 3, which at present is stationed at No. 183 Concord Street, was organized on Sept. 15, 1869, and occupied the house at No. 236 Gold Street, which was formerly used by Volunteer Engine No. n and later by
Volunteer Truck No. 2. That house was a two-story brick building, 20 x 50 feet; the whole first floor was used as an apparatus-room, with two stalls in the rear for the horses, the second floor being fitted up as sleeping apartments for the officers and men. On April 29, 1874. the company removed to its present quarters on Concord Street, a two-story brick building. 25x75 feet.  The apparatus-room has three stalls in the rear, and has lately been
supplied with a patent extension ladder.

Mack, do you know what year E-15's old quarters on Henry Street was built? I stopped in there in 1997 when they were still responding from there and they told me (at that time) that it was oldest operating firehouse in NYC.

So I guess they were right about being the oldest functioning firehouse in 1997. Too bad they shut that firehouse down. Lots of history there.

This is an earlier picture of a Henry Street firehouse, built by volunteer company Americus Engine 6, predecessor to FDNY Engine 15.  Structure is smaller and very different than 3story firehouse used by E 15.

Now that shot's going back a few years.

What year did Engine 15 move to Fort Pitt?
