Was "High Ladder 1, Disbanded 1966" what eventually became 24 Truck?  I believe they had one of the first (what's now called) rear mounts in the late '50's or early '60's.

24 Truck has never been disbanded.  High Ladder 1 was a separate unit.  They may have both been assigned the Mack Magirus at different times.

When Mack said disbanded second section companies, at first I thought, that's easy - all of them.

Actually, many of them were organized and disbanded more than once.  These dates are for the last time that they were disbanded.

I didn't mean that they were disbanded, but wasn't their tiller ladder replaced by High Ladder 1 which was an early version of today's rear mount?  Sorry for the confusion.

I think that you are correct.  The apparatus of the High Ladders were described on this site a couple of years back.  Search 'High Ladder' and it should come right up.

Then there were some disbandings due to a renumbering that only lasted two years:

Division Renumbering of 1995 to 1997
Division 03 Renumbered as Division 02 1995 to 1997
Division 06 Renumbered as Division 03 1995 to 1997
Division 07 Renumbered as Division 04 1995 to 1997
Division 11 Renumbered as Division 06 1995 to 1997
Division 14 Renumbered as Division 05 1995 to 1997
Division 15 Renumbered as Division 07 1995 to 1997

This caused the 11, 12, 13, 14, & 15 to be disbanded in 1995
and then caused the 2, 4, & 5 to be disbanded in 1997.

The 12 was disbanded permanently during this exercise.

A good part of the process with the companies disbanded on July 2 and almost immediately reorganized is that the city's fiscal year begins on July 1.  If I remember correctly, this was all an accounting and budgetary gimmick.

Thanks guys.  Always sad and difficult to disband units.

Some busy companies were disbanded -  Engine 17, Lower East Side, Engine 85, South Bronx and Engine 232, Brownsville.

I never thought Engine 17 would be disbanded.  Always a very busy company and a very good company.  The War Years were difficult responding into Alphabet City 10-15 times a night.

Engine 85 was one of the busiest engines in NYC, located at Engine 82/Ladder 31 and then the Tin House.

And Engine 232 which ran from Watkins Street and then from Brooklyn's Tin House.

It was terrible the way Engine 232 was placed OOS - Superbowl.  Relocated.  Shutdown

Both "Tin Houses", Engine 85, and Engine 232/Ladder 176, designed to be portable firehouses for the busier areas of the city closed down. When they were designed and occupied, they were a unique part of the fire service that as far as I know, had never been tried before.

Today, both of these "specially designed firehouses" are no longer used as firehouses but still operating as FDNY/EMS Stations. But they certainly were a "Classic" during their years of operation.

In response to the discussion of the color of FDNY firehouse doors on "My Younger Buff Years" thread, somebody mentioned about the color of the doors that the "then" new firehouse for 225/107 as being painted black or blue. I vaguely remember riding by that firehouse sometime in maybe the 70s or early 80s and I think they were painted "blue". Looking more like a police prescient.

I remember finding that strange because many of the other younger buffs who I hung around with always liked the red painted firehouse doors. I remember at the time, only one firehouse in Bridgeport, Ct had red doors. That was a new Engine 16 firehouse. All the other firehouses in that city had GREEN doors. We would always wish that Bridgeport painted their doors red like the FDNY. "Strange when you're much younger, what your biggest concerns are in life".

But today, just as the FDNY, all of Bridgeport, Ct's firehouse doors are painted RED. And so are most other cities of Connecticut. That makes me very happy for that. I guess it's one less thing I have to worry about.
