Mack,  great post on 310/174. Prior to the forming of Ladder 174 Engine 310 ran with a Ward QUAD rig for a good number of years. I know it was there in the fifties. A real long rig with a bunch of ladders plus regular engine company equipment. Also, although I might be wrong, I do believe that they ran with an extra man or two above the normal engine compliment of riding crews. There should be pictures of that Ward some where on the net.

  E310's Quad (Shop #2613) was originally assigned to E96 then swapped for E310's 1951 Ward LaFrance (#2609) and it served at 310 until it was reassigned to E323 and E310 got E323's 1953 Ward LaFrance (#3305).

  Looks like 267 is on building inspection....the old masonite sign on the rear side of the Rig & the Officer sitting in the Rig doing paperwork & the FFs off doing an inspection.....the sign explaining that the Unit was in service but performing inspections was later made out of vinyl then went by the wayside around the end of the '80s.

  E267 got this 1951 WLF Quad (#2614) which was originally assigned to L76 after L76 got a new 1955 FWD 75ft. wood aerial.

In regard to reply # 1453 on LAD*174....when 174 was organized in 1966 their budget line as well as  some of the Members came from SQ*8 which was disbanded at that time....174s 1st Rig if i remember was  a '55 FWD wooden aerial then later on they had a hand me down '68 or '69 ALF .

In April 2012, Engine 310 temporarily moved to Engine 248 and Ladder 174 moved in with Engine 283.

Does anyone recall in what month the companies returned?

You can also see above the door of the fire house Engine 310 Ladder 160. That company was never formed there.

At the time Ladder 174 was organized, the originally planned Ladder 160 for that firehouse still had not been organized, yet the number was not used.  Available unused Brooklyn ladder numbers 133 and 145 could also have been used.  Ladder 145 was even planned for the same general area, on Sheffield Ave.

LAD*8 FH RENOVATION PLANNED.... An interesting thing in the article is that they mention that years ago the FH originally a 2 bay FH on the West side of Varick St at North Moore St was cut in half & one half was moved to the present location on the East side of Varick St.....what they do not mention is that one would think they would have demolished the old right hand bay & move the left hand bay but they did just the opposite ...... www.ufanyc.org/cms/contents/view/19250

Half of the house was lost when the street was widen when the subway was built so I was told over the years.  From history, Lad 8's section section responded from Eng 30 on Spring St. - Engine 30.

Ladder 8 history:

    1914-1915 firehouse redesigned (cut in half): 

          In 1914, Varick Street was widened by 30 feet to connect with 7th Avenue.  FDNY looked at property across the street as a site for a replacement building.  Fire Commissioner Robert Adamson decided to cut the firehouse in half.  The cost to buy the site across the street would have been $110,000 and the cost of razing the existing building would have added another $25,000. Reducing the double company to a single one and renovating the structure to half its size instead cost only $20,000.  Ladder 8 was relocated to Engine 30.  The firehouse alterations, completed in 1915, were almost invisible. The limestone cornices, carved stone brackets and windows were all expertly copied.

      Ladder 8 - scaling ladder rescue - October 25, 1916:

          Ladder 8 responded to a fire in a factory building at 21-25 East Houston Street.  The building was engulfed in flames and working girls were trapped inside. Ida Goldberg, appeared in a seventh story window with no way out.  FF John Walsh hung his scaling ladder from the cornice of an adjoining building and, by ?swinging like a pendulum" was able to grab the girl by the arm. Though a slip meant death, he brought her to safety,? praised The New York Times.  Commissioner Adamson called the action ?one of the finest rescues in the history of the New York Fire Department. Walsh was awarded the James Gordon Bennett and Dr Harry M. Archer Medals of Valor for this rescue.  FF Michael Sloane was awarded the Strong Medal.  Captain John E Farley was awarded a Department Medal.
