Reffering to E259 L128 quarters
Its the house watch. No elevator in the house. They did a complete gut job on the house. Pretty much only the walls and the roof remained. Everything else was removed. Would have been cheaper and quicker to just knock it down and rebuild it.
The rebuilding of the front of 128/259/45 was a great modernization of a double door FH....287/136/46 could certainly benefit from the same however back mid '90s when that FH was renovated the powers claimed it could not be done as it was a landmark bldg which it is NOT....the BN Rig has to be snaked into the side of the apparatus floor a pain.

Connie Metzger the Father was in 147 not sure if he had ever been in 102 but his Son also Connie was in 102 back in the '60s/70s.....the picture is from the '60s the Rig is a '60 ALF & the Myrtle Av El in the background was not torn down until around '69/'70.

Chief - Is picture of Connie Metzger in L 102 not the "correct Metzger"?  I think it is Connie, the son.

I hate how it lost the look of the old classic firehouse throughout the building, but it is nicer not having to piggy back the battalion with the engine or truck.
This was a 100 year old firehouse too but not considered a landmark.

I have to dig out the three Books written by DC Phil Burns, I remember the name Connie Metzger but not sure which one, when I find it I will post. DC Burns was FF in L132 at the time CM was in 102,and the chapter referred to tough Fireman at a job.

Way back in the forties, at Engine 225 we had a fireman named John Gunning who showed me pictures of him sitting on the hose reel that went with the steam pumper. He also took me down in the basement and showed me the pot belly stove that kept the water hot in the boiler of the horse drawn steam pumper and then the pipe that carried it up stairs to the apparatus floor at the back left looking from the front. They also had the hose racks on the left wall looking from the front. John was quite an interesting fellow. Dating back to those days was also Capt. Fredrick Pl Allen who took me under his wing so to speak and taught me an awful lot of what a fireman had to know. May they both Rest in Peace after a job well done.

"New York Illustrated" had a show around 1976 entitled "Fire....Everyone Goes" which featured 102, 209 and Batt 34. CM (the son) was interviewed as a member of 102.
Going back to 281/147, that was an interesting house to relocate to, the bays were angled and if an LCC was unfamiliar with the lay-out, it would take several approaches to back a rig in.
