Over charging or poorly done Fast Charging of Lithium-Ion Batteries can result in the growth of "dendrites" within the batteries. These dendrites can grow to the point that they impinge upon the separation between the positive and negative sides of the battery, causing a Short Circuit within the battery. Also, anything that penetrates the batteries separation can also cause a short circuit. Drive a nail through the battery and you can have a short and a fire. A fire in the area of, or within a bank of batteries destroys the separation within the battery positive and negative side that too will cause a short and a runaway fire within the battery and spread to other cells or batteries in a group of batteries. In SHORT do no drop, pierce over or fast change or exposure to fire any Lithium-Ion batteries.
This information comes from the University of the Western Pacific among other research sources. Studies are still ongoing.
