FDNY  Chief Officer Cars and Vehicles

I have not been able to get a good list of Chief cars.  Chief cars don?t get the attention of engines and ladders.

Let us create our own listing utilizing the knowledge and expertise of the members of this forum.

So I am proposing the following:

(1) Reply with any information that you have on Chief cars, including year, make and model

(2) Try to post a picture with an internet link of as many of the vehicles as possible

We should be able to gather a good amount of information e.g.

I will start it off with these pictures:

This needs year, make and model

This is probably a mid to late 70?s Pontiac.    1976 Pontiac Le Mans

This public domain movie, made in 1927is a film of FDNY Chief John Kenlon in his Chief's Car responding to a fire. Present day emergency warning sounds have been added to give it a little life.

Back in the late 60's early 70,s I'm not sure of the makes or models, but I do remember several of the Batt. cars as being either Ford or Dodge 4-door station wagons.  Besides the cases with the Scott air packs, inhalator/Resuscitator , turnout gear for the chief and aide and a first aid kit.

The Pontiac is a 1976 Lemans. The NYPD had a large order for Pontiacs that same year. The suburban looks like a 1978/1980 suburban.

From what i have gathered there was atleast 3 or 4 orders in the 80s

GMC's were brought in 81/82

Chevy's were brought in 83/84

and GMC's were brought sometime after the department switched to red with white roofs

There were a 4 orders brought in the 90s

The Chevys were brought in 1991

GMC's were brought in 1994 and 1997
1994

1997

Chevy's were purchased in 1999

In addtion to this there were also a few sedans

Diplomats and Gran Furys were brought in the 80s
http://policecarwebsite.atspace.tv/fdcarsuv/car/cars3.html (second row second column)

During the 90s there were caprices and crown vics

1993 caprice

1993/4 Crown Vic

in the 2000s era there were impalas and crown vics

2001/2002 Crown Vic

2006/2007 Impala

If your also doing EMS conditions/captains vehicles there were 2 additional types of vehicles purchased if you want i can give you some info on them

I hope this helps

When I was the aide to the aide in B 41 in the late 60s, we had a fairly plain, red Ford station wagon.

........g man you are correct about that....he loved to be in photos ...he persecuted the famous Buff & Fire photographer Paul Thayer because Paul (who rode w/ LAD*26 & later LAD*28 ) would only take pictures of Fires not Cavanaugh....he had Pauls darkroom in the basement of 28 demolished & forbid WNYF from publishing his excellent fire photos anymore...if you look at some older WNYFs you  will see photos credited to "Olaf Trygverson"....these were Pauls after the ban...translation of the name was something like "to triumph over the dumb".....Paul was a great guy ..He was a NYC Bus driver.

Anyone have a year or make on this?

When I started riding with the 38th Battalion in 1968 they had one, I believe it's a 1968 Ford Fairlane station wagon.

I don't think so, Mets.  Here's a '68 Ford Fairlane:

ford-fairlane-1968a.jpg

Oops . . . my bad.  The FIRST pic is, indeed, a Ford.  But the SECOND is a '77 Plymouth

The car in the photo is definitely a Plymouth . . . I think a 1977 Plymouth Fury like this one:

I remember in the 1950's    B 52 and B 53 had 1952 Chevrolet Chief Cars  with the BELL mounter in the middle of the front bumper.  Wish we could get pictures  8)
