On January 3, 1977, Firefighter Aversa suffered injuries when he fell from a third floor roof while operating at a fire in a garden apartment at 67-91 2333rd Place, in Fresh Meadows, Queens. He was chopping a hole in the roof and had put a foot in the gutter. The gutter gave way and he went down. Firefighter Aversa suffered spinal and internal injuries. He succumbed to his injuries on January 17, 1977, at Long Island Jewish Hospital.
