Several firemen became trapped while working at an exceptionally severe cellar fire in a tenement at 91 Allen Street. Fireman Murphy was found, but could not be revived and died of asphyxiation. Many other firemen were overcome in the rescue effort.

At the time of Fireman Murphy's death, Ladder 9's quarters were on Elizabeth Street.
Ladder 9 moved in with Engine 33 on Great Jones Street in 1948.
