Fireman Johnston died of smoke inhalation while operating at a three-alarm fire in a four -story brick building at 2452 Bedford Avenue. He was overcome while attempting to rescue a family on the third floor. This fire was the fifth fire in four hours that was set within a 10 block area. An arsonist was blamed for all five pre-dawn fires.

Fireman James J. Johnston #2 of Engine 310 was overcome by smoke while trying to rescue a family on the third floor of an apartment building. The fire at 4:45 in the morning was the fifth arson fire in three and one half hours within a ten-block area that left hundreds homeless. Fireman Johnston was ordered to enter the third floor to rescue a family of three from the rear apartment. He entered a heavy smoke condition and was overcome. Dragged out by other firemen, he died in the hospital from smoke inhalation. He was twenty-six years old, married and the father of two small children. He had taken the test for Lieutenant and was number two on the list. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)

RIP. Never forget.

Engine 310 was a single engine firehouse in 1963 when FF Johnston E 310 was ordered to search the 3rd floor for occupants. Ladder 174 was organized at Engine 310 in 1966.

When Firemen Johnson E-310 died a woman who had a young son that loved the F.D.N.Y. Wrote a Poem in his memory that was published in W.N.Y.F. NOTE Click 0n the scan0029 below for the Poem written for Firemen Johnson's Family to honor him.
The Knights of Malta were the also called the Knight of Saint John and fought the Saracens for Possession of the Holy Land during the Middle Ages. The Knight of Malta were called that because the assembly point for the Knights of the Crusades was the Island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.
Among the weapons used by the Saracens were glass ball filled with Naphtha and thrown into the oncoming Knights of Malta ranks and then ignited with flaming arrows. Fighting the fires to save their brother Knights from burning to death is the reason the Maltese Cross is shape of most firefighter badges.

I stand corrected ...Ken is correct .....it was Whitney Ave in Gerritsen Beach...........

a very knowledgeable Friend who is RET FDNY & a lifelong BKLYN resident provided this further info.....

QUOTE...
That was on Whitney Ave in Gerritsen Beach. Byrnes Funeral Home (Whitney & Gerritsen) was right next to it and I believe the Mass was at Resurrection RC Church at the same corner.
In the funeral procession picture The apt buildings in the background are on Plumb 1st St and the expo 3 side of the ones on Knapp St. Whitney Ave is a one way facing East. In the procession they are going west either after leaving the funeral home or church.

In the still picture of the Graham you can see the cars in front of it are on the left side facing. East. Had it been Graham Ave, which is a two way, the cars in front of it would have been facing in the opposite direction.

That’s my synopses and I’m sticking to it. Lol. :). UNQUOTE........

Thank You all & CONTINUED REST IN PEACE TO FF JOHNSTON.
