Fireman Berkery and two other firemen were blown into the water by an explosion at a four alarm blaze in the rubber tire, tar, and coal filled hold of a 5000 ton freighter tied up to a dock at Kane St. Fireman Berkery died from drowning. The two other firemen were rescued and taken to the hospital afterward. Fireman Berkery was the son-in-law to Deputy Chief John J. Ryan, who was also there at the fire.

When these quarters were occupied, the company was already designated as Engine 203. Engine 103 was never in this building.

When was the 103 added? After 203 was disbanded by a private owner?

Before Engine 103, it used to say BYE BYE BIRDIE. I believe it was owned by a company that cleaned up after pigeons.
A subsequent owner put up the Engine 103.

1936: The Cat-Saving Fire Dog Hero of Brooklyn’ s Engine No. 203

When Nip the fire dog died in 1939, the men of Engine No. 203 had his body stuffed and mounted. The fire dog is forever on display at the NYC Fire Museum.
