Fireman Robert T. Smullen, 30
Ladder 142
FDNY. Queens, New York
While responding to an alarm in Brooklyn, Fireman Smullen was crushed to death when he was caught between the turntable and the tractor as the truck was making a turn.
While Ladder 142 was exiting from quarters, Fireman Robert Smullen went into the street to stop traffic. As the truck was moving he went to jump on the side but slipped. He was crushed between the wheels of the tractor and trailer as it was turning. The run was a false alarm. He lived at 11-28 Grassmere Terrace in Far Rockaway. The father of five children, he was thirty-one years old and a member of the Department for six and one-half years. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)
