FDNY Line of Duty Death

January 28, 1941 - LODD
Lieutenant Benjamin Parcell, 66
Ladder 121
FDNY. Queens, New York

Lieutenant Parcells died as a result of injuries he sustained the previous day, when he fell from an icy roof while operating at a fire at 417 Bert Road, Broad Channel, Queens.

Lieutenant Benjamin Parcell of Ladder 121 lost his life when he slid off an icy roof. Lieutenant Parcell climbed to the roof of 417 Bert Road to direct the cutting of a hole to ventilate the fire in the two-story frame building. A major snowstorm was blowing at the time and the roof was slick. He slipped and fell twenty feet to the ground, breaking his spine and fracturing his skull. He was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later. He was sixty-five years old and a member of the Department for 43 years. He lived at 555 Beach 129th Street with his family. RIP. Never forget.

There was no mandatory retirement age until about 1956. I recall a good friend of the family, LT John Gillen, E48, being forced to retire when the rule went into effect. I believe he was already past 70 years if age.
