FDNY Patches & Rig Decals

It would be neat if someone made a book of all the patches/company logos with the saying and there meanings.

Yes it would. Quite a few of those company patches were designed in the late 70’s and early 80’s thus as time goes on the stories on how and why the unique company logo was chosen begins to fade.

I have a Fort Pitt patch with Engine 17 upside down.

I was a firefighter in Tower Ladder 18 from 1977 to 1984. The firehouse is on Pitt Street, and it looks, very much like a castle or Fort. When I was a firefighter, their Engine 17 and Battalion 4. A few years back Engine 17 was closed, and Engine 15 was moved into the Pitt St. Firehouse from their form Firehouse on Henry Street. only a few block away. "Fort Pitt" is large firehouse as I was originally built for Engine 17, Tower Ladder 18, Battalion 4 and Squad 5. But squad 5 was closed before there fire house was opened. Here is a photo of the member of Engine 17, TL-18 & Battalion 4 in 1978. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.

Hey Cap, it seems so odd that Broome St was opened in 1939 and then a mere 34 years later Pitt St firehouse was opened. Broome St sat vacant and was used for movies and TV shows well into the late 90's. In FDNY there are firehouses still open that have been open over 125 years. Any idea why the job chose to replace a 34 year old firehouse?

My former unit Engine 26 at W. 37 St. is the oldest ACTIVE firehouse in the FDNY. I was always told it was built in 1860 and has been in continuous use ever since. The only exception I know about is the fire was being renovated on and about the WTC 9-11Attack. The Henry Street firehouse of Engine 15 was closed because the foundations was cracked during construction of the adjoining NEW "Henry Street Settlement House"
Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.

W 37th St was built in 1860 by volunteer Valley Forge Engine 46.
Engine 26 was disbanded between July 2, 1975 and July 19, 1975.
Engine 26 was with Engine 34 during the renovation between July 21, 2001 and February 2, 2002. Earlier renovations happened in 1881 and 1894.

I was also laid off from the FDNY from July 1, 1975, till March 1976. I never heard before that Engine 26 was disbanded between July 2nd & July 19,1975. Thanks for this information. I was retired on July 17, 2000, and later when I responded to the World Trade Center, I had to go to the quarters of Engine 34/TL-21 where Engine 26 was being housed during the renovations to the firehouse at 220 W. 37 St. From there both active and retired members of all 3 units went down to the World Trade Center site together, mostly in Red Cross Vehicles. Others and I, at times, operated assisting Deputy Chief Nick Visconti (Just recently passed away from 9/11 related illness) on the West St. side of the W.T.C. Site.
Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.

I believe Engine 226 is the oldest firehouse in continuous use.
Engine 26 was disbanded for a short time.
