This is clearly a total insult, to the thousands of members who worked so hard and did what they had to do to pass all of those test in order get that job. "A slap in the face as I see it".
Should a doctor be able to perform surgery even though he can't pass the required test ?
Should a lawyer be able to practice law even though he can't pass the bar exam ?
Is this fair to the millions of people of New York City who depend so much on the members of the FDNY ? Is it fair to them ?
Should the visitors and commuters coming into New York City feel comfortable knowing that not all of the firefighters passed the minimum test to do their job.
And what about all those who hadn't passed the test before and were told they weren't qualified to become members of the FDNY ? Is that a slap in the face to them also ?
I am not a citizen of NYC, but I do visit NYC often. I can only speak for myself. Do I feel comfortable about this ? Absolutely not. The same way I wouldn't feel comfortable about hiring a doctor or a lawyer who hasn't passed the basic test.
At some point, cities just can NOT keep lowering the standards so that everybody will be able to pass a firefighters test. If there is a problem, then this is NOT the answer to an issue that needs to be addressed in some other way.
