Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the Line of Duty death of FIRE FIGHTER WILLIAM F McGUIRE Jr. Mugsy was called into an incident at Market and Temple Sts in Lawrence to perform overhall operations following a 2 alarm fire at this location. Shortly after his arrival he was checking on some hot spots at the front of the second floor of the building when the upper porches collapsed and burried him under the rubble. An intensive and rapid operation was undertaken to remove him from this rubble. Billy was taken to Lawrence General Hospital and transferd to Mass General within a short period of time.
He passed away from his injuries 2 days later.
His funeral was held on the 23rd of December on a cold and blustery day, attended by thounsadns of firefighters from throughout the nation. Billy served as a memeber of the executive board of IAFF 146 for many years, was a second generation firefighter and most of all a loving husband and father.
He left behind his wife Rilla, and three children the youngest was just a few months old at the time.
RIP my friend may we never forget.
